"Leaders can get detached when they get to the top and lose sight of what is happening on the ground."

QUESTION:

What steps will you take to stay connected and informed about the day-to-day operations and concerns of your team or organisation?

"We always are in firefighting mode - fighting and responding and reacting, and we're pretty damn good at it! What we're not so good at is creating time for deeper thinking."

QUESTION:

If you had time and space to think more deeply about the core and critical questions, what would change for you? And to embark on that journey, what will you need to do differently?

"There may be people who, on paper, have no 'experience' in a field, but that exact lack of experience can sometimes bring the very wisdom we are seeking, because it means they don't have any learned behaviour of how we should think or how we've been taught to think".

QUESTION:

If you worked in an environment where fresh, diverse ideas were encouraged and welcome, what would change?

"The NHS is steeped in evidence-based theory, practice etc, and quite rightly, but compassion is something that's vitally important as an ingredient. But it's somehow immeasurable".

QUESTION:

If we really took account of the very real difference research shows compassion can make to staff and patient outcomes, what steps would we take to instil it in our organisations? How would we know when it was being given and received?
